The Art of the Async Update

In a global tech team, most communication happens "async" (asynchronously) via Slack, Jira, or Notion. To be effective, your writing must be precise and easy to scan.

Uncountable Tech Nouns

One of the most common mistakes is adding an "-s" to words that don't have a plural form.

Busy colleagues won't read a "Wall of Text." Use this template for your async updates:

• Progress: What did you actually finish? (Use Simple Past)
• Next Steps: What are you doing next?
• Blockers: Do you need anything from anyone?

Using Articles (A, An, The)

• Use "a/an" for general things: "I found a bug."
• Use "the" for specific things the team knows about: "The bug in the login flow is fixed."
• Use no article for general concepts: "Security is our top priority."

Metrics and numbers

When you add a number or plural unit, uncountable nouns become countable.

• We collected three data points.
• I have two pieces of feedback for you.
• She shared several useful insights.
